Paramedic Education and Promotion Process
Employees interested in becoming a paramedic should review the following process and requirements. This guidance outlines the steps necessary to apply for paramedic school and the expectations during training and promotion. Select a step below to view details and requirements.
1. Research Available Paramedic Programs
Employees should research and evaluate which paramedic program best fits their needs. Consider factors such as program location, prerequisite requirements, program length, cohort timelines, and potential opportunities for future education.
The following programs offer both Spring and Fall cohorts:
• Gold Cross Paramedic Program
• Weber State Paramedic Program

2. Review Tuition Assistance Policy
Employees must review Policy 100-110: Tuition Assistance Program to understand the policies and procedures related to tuition reimbursement.
3. Contact Program Advisors
Prior to applying, employees should contact the academic advisor or program coordinator for their desired paramedic program. This will help ensure that all current or planned prerequisite coursework meets the program’s admission requirements.
4. Consult with the EMS Captain
After researching the program and confirming prerequisite requirements, employees should contact the EMS Captain with any questions regarding attendance at a paramedic program and department expectations.
5. Prerequisites
Employees must complete the required prerequisites for their selected paramedic program. Approved prerequisite coursework may be submitted for reimbursement in accordance with Policy 100-110: Tuition Assistance Program.
• Gold Cross Prerequisites
• UVU Prerequisites
• Weber State Prerequisites
6. Apply to the Paramedic Program
Once all prerequisites have been completed, employees may submit their application to the UFA internal paramedic application.

• Students attending paramedic school will not be permitted to work overtime during the program.
• Students should review the Paramedic School Agreement.
8. First Semester Expectations
During the first semester (Spring or Fall), students are expected to attend all scheduled classes and clinical rotations.
• For school-related matters, students will follow the program’s chain of command.
• The EMS Captain will be the student’s supervisor.
9. Second Semester Operations Assignment
During the second semester, students will return to operations and will be scheduled as a firefighter while completing field training under the supervision of a paramedic preceptor.
10. Certification and Promotion

• After obtaining National Registry certification, the Utah State paramedic license will be issued shortly thereafter.
